Can you please explain rank points to me? I am a new freshman parent and I am confused how a team can score 5-7 points better than an opponent and then lose spots due to ranks points. Are rank points decided after the whole meet is done??
ReplyDeleteEach judge ranks the teams based on their own individual points that they have scored the teams in that division. Then the high and low rank of each team is thrown out for an overalll rank that indicates their final placement. That is part of the tabulation process. If the scoring process relied soley on total points, a team could win (or lose) if one judge ends up scoring a particular team too high or too low.
ReplyDeleteTo add on to that previous question, why are there two different judging associations (JAM and Dance Xtreme)? Whats the difference and what associations judges sections and state?
ReplyDeleteA rank is assigned by the tab room once an individual judges scores are all in for the day. The judge herself does not assign rank, just a raw score. This way, if a judge gave the best team a 38, and another judge gave her best team a 58 - the higher points judge wouldn't have more sway, rather they'd both earn 1 rank point. Lowest rank in the end winning. What gets dropped is determined by how many judges there are. Most meets have one high (worst) ranking dropped, and one low (best). I personally like this system even if I've been that team with more total points and a lower placement on a few occasions. Usually I take that to mean those who liked it, really did, and those who didn't thought it wasn't by much.
ReplyDeleteAs far as judges associations go, its just a choice for schools and judges to make as to who they'd like to be a part of. I'm neutral myself - there are talented judges in both associations. Each group has its own rules for membership and standards for education, training, meet assignments, ect. They both use the exact same scoresheet, judging criteria as specified by the high school league, take the same exam to judge, and register with the league. Currently, JAM has decided not to mix their judges with a DX panel, so we're at an impasse when it comes to state and sections. Currently, the section managers hire a judging panel an the criteria is different for each section. Some alternate, some don't, some vote on it, ect. State is picked by the MSHSL and follows specific criteria for reviews by coaches, rules about how many years you can do it, ect. Last year, no DX judges met criteria of experience for judging state, but as they start to, it will be interesting to see if the MSHSL will require a mixed panel at state or not. Hope that clarifies! I hope to put out some pre-state info regarding the judging panels for the year prior to the meet, but that's TBD right now.
I know there has been a lot of hype about St. Cloud Tech's jazz routine this year, but how is their kick? Like is it finals material as well?
ReplyDeleteI have only seen it once, and it was pretty good. Not amazing, but very sharp and clean. I think they have a good chance of making it to finals for kick. I will go out of my way and say that Apple Valley, Eastview (havent seen their dance, but really excited if they are doing what I think they are) Burnsville (havent seen their dance either, but from the sound of it, could be a top three contender), Brainerd, and Eden Prairie will join them in finals.

DeleteYes, Wayzata and Blaine beat Apple Valley in kick at the Wayzata invite, however that was the first time Apple Valley performed their new dance. Also, it was Wayzata's own invite and I feel like scores are always "improved" when a team is dancing at their own invite. Additionally, I am not impressed with Blaine's kick this year. It is not up to par with the other routines. These are my personal opinions and it doesn't mean different teams can not make it to finals. I would not be totally shocked if Wayzata or Blaine made it to finals, I just think Apple Valley will.

ReplyDeleteI liked their first routine much better (the one they did at their own invite). The new one just seemed like a mess to me. Not the performance of last year's 3rd place team. The music wasn't that great which was a distraction.
DeleteI have not personally seen it, so I can not say. I have heard that it is sort of a "different" song. Not that the song itself is weird, but the way Apple Valley manipulated it makes it not a song that people would enjoy. I have heard they are still in great form, and overall it is a good routine, but the song choice just was not a smart one.
ReplyDeleteI have to disagree with the idea that "scores improve at one's own invite". Our team has attended two invites this year in which the hosting teams did not even place in some cases and at other competitions, not hosted by them, they have placed....with same teams present.

I actually disagree with the comments about Apple Valley's dance. I feel like it is superior to their conference dance, and I did not notice the "weirdness" of the music. It is a high energy dance that gets the audience involved. The costumes (I guess they did not wear these are Wayzata) are adorable and it really is a cute dance.
