    2. Did anyone ever figure out what really happen with Cathedrals coaches and stuff this year?

    3. I don't think this is an appropriate question to even ask on this website. Now people are assuming something bad happened without knowing anything. I have no idea what happened but I hope you take the high road and remove this gossip completely.

    4. Sartell Dance Dad again. I only said that to my Cathedral friends because after talking to them I know how proud they were of what their daughters accomplished considering they lost coaches mid season!! I did not mean to start a conversation about that issue and I ask all to leave that ALONE!!!! PLEASE!!!!! I was just congratulating our new State Champs Chaska and our local teams who did well at State. That was all!!!!!! Lets all keep the conversation on here positive, ok.

    1. thanks for the correction! I was told that was final, but it was 3rd hand information. When I went to MSHSL I thought I got it wrong, glad to see I had it right when no one else did. I'll fix it again, back to the original info I had. Sorry for the confusion.

  4. Congrats YME on getting your 15th and 16th state medals on your 16th straight year of going to state!

This years state competition was awesome! So much talent from ALL of the teams.

    1. I second that motion. Not only have the Silhouettes been to state 16 straight years with 16 medals they have been to the finals in both disciplines for 13 straight years. What a tremendous accomplishment.

This years tournament had to be the best ever. What an incredible group of special, hard working and talented girls. Every team's coaches, parents, grandparents and fans should be SO proud of your girls.

  5. Another GREAT State weekend everyone! Congratulations to ALL of the wonderful teams that were there! I enjoyed working there and absolutely had a blast seeing all of the coaches, dancers, and other friends! Minnesota Dance Teams have certainly come ALONG way, and the talent out there is something that everyone should be VERY proud of! I can't believe that another season is behind us, but I can't wait to see what 2012-2013 brings! I teach Just For Kix in St. Michael/Albertville, and a parent group is trying to start a new team if there is anyone out there who is interested in leading a group of VERY enthusiastic (and talented) dancers. Details are still in the works, but they're hoping to start something as soon as next season!! Again, a HUGE thank you to those who make STATE WEEKEND my favorite holiday of the year!!

  6. Way to go all State AA teams - what a meet!!!

Erin, maybe next year you can remind parents about sportsmanship. Every teams parents except 1 central MN team stood & applauded the AA winners, kinda a shame to see such poor sportsmanship when everyone there knows how hard all the girls work. I was embarrassed as an out-state parent.

Dancers you rocked the house this weekend!

    ReplyDelete
  7. As an outstate dance parent of a central MN AA team, I'm disappointed that you made that comment. I sat on the AA side and everyone was standing. Please don't pass judgments about poor sportsmanship, that in itself is pretty unsportsmanlike.

  8. What an amazing weekend of STATE! WOW! I was just amazed by ALL the tremendous talent in the state of MN. I can honestly say I thought it was one of the best years of the state tournament both on the floor and behind the scenes. The camaraderie among many of the teams throughout ALL classes was something that made me even more proud to be part of MN dance team! The sportsmanship from most of the dancers in attendance was OUTSTANDING! For me, this was one of the best parts of state. Everyone team did a wonderful job. Kudos to ALL!

  9. The A and AA portion of the competition was fabulous. Everyone of those teams deserved to be there. The AAA portion of it, well was not really amazed by it. I mean if turning lights on is the coolest thing in a dance, I feel like dance team as a whole has a problem. What happened to people being blown away by kicks or formations and visuals? Not taking anything away from that team, they deserved the title, but all people could talk about was the lights. Yeah it was cool, but it seems that dance team is heading towards who can come up with the best gimmick and not really the best dance.

Those are just my personal opinions though. We all have to agree that we love the most subjective sport in the world and that is what I like about it. And congratulations should not only go out the state participant teams, but to all dance teams in Minnesota. Great job girls on a fun and exciting season. Hope 2012-13 is even better.

    1. I have similar feelings. I thought the kick competition in all classes was fantastic! While there may have been a favorite going into finals, I think not knowing exactly how all the final placings were going to end up was really exciting. I think with kick - the final results really comes down to choreography, skill and how the teams perform at that time. There is no room for error! And I love that this can change year to year. I truly do not mean to take anything away from the jazz medalists, but with jazz, I feel that some of the results were based on reputation and not necessarily on the final dance or performance. I was just left a bit disappointed with the final jazz results - they seemed too predictable and in a couple cases, I felt some teams could have placed higher than they did.

    2. Which AAA team had lights in their dance?

  10. Erin, is it at all possible for you to get the pre sectional places? I am really curious to see where teams placed.

    1. I'll post sections placements if I get them, but I haven't seen anything yet. I'll try to fill in the state results, but as this is a new thing, I'm not sure how people feel about the prelims placements being made public once state is over, because they aren't really an "official" result and I only see negative things coming out of that...but it's really up to the people who submit to me to let me in on information - the league and judges don't have anything to do with it. (this year at least)

      Delete
    2. I dont know if you understood my question. I was referring to the Pre-Sectional Showcase held at Eastview the last weekend in January. I know you can't just ask someone and get them, but since you have connections with the coaching world, I was wondering if someone would release those placements. Really just interested to see how Chaska did with the AAA teams.

      Delete
    3. That would still be entirely up to those teams to decide if they would like to release that information. I wouldn't wait around to find out, I'd guess no.

  11. Where can i find pictures of the teams as they were performing?

    ReplyDelete
  12. When and why did they stop switching the judges for prelims and finals?? It always seems that its not really a new competition in the final round with the same judges. At least in Class A.

Congrats to all the teams!! It really was a great weekend of dance team.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I wonder this also. I think they should switch judges too. I would like to hear what other opinions are on this.

      Delete
    2. Not sure about when that started/stopped. I felt that placements did in fact change from prelims to finals and that it was deserved in every case I know about. Yes, it is possible for a team to barely make finals in the morning and be 4th by the end of the night just based on "bringing it". I know the setup has been decided by coaches, league reps, and judges as to what will work best. I personally don't have a problem with it either way. If you're the best, I think you will win no matter how it's set up.

      Delete
    3. I think they should do what studio competitions do at their nationals. For instance, at Starpower Nationals they have a set of judges. Then, for their "Battle of the Stars" which is where they bring back the top routines to compete again on the final day, they take 1/2 of the original judges, and 1/2 new judges. It may not change much, but it be interesting to see new opinions.

      Delete
    4. I think that would help a lot. A lot of years (not necessarily this year) it seems teams who performed well in prelims but didn't necessarily perform as well in finals dont move down like they should. Teams are getting closer and closer every year and if a team has a stumble in finals or a kick error it should affect the score. But I believe the judges keep the prelims performance in mind while judging finals. I think it would be easier on dancers knowing its different judges and they actually have a chance to move up after finding out what place they are in going into finals.

  13. This may not be the proper venue for this but its a problem that needs to be resolved! The seating on the A/AA side is getting to a dangerous point, and believe it or not, I'm serious! Fans new to the A/AA side don't realize that its a free for all after 3:00 pm, did anyone else have problems with this? Then in trying to keep with the schedule, St,. cloud Cathedral had to start dancing will the maority of the crowd was still trying to be seated...I am not from Cathedral and they did great, but it had to be distracting for the girls! Maybe MSHSL could run it more like football wear the Class A comes in , sits down watches their girls, leaves after prelim, the Class AA comes in and does the same and then leaves after prelims. Class A comes back for finals and then leaves and lets Class AA come in for their finals...AAA does not understand as they do not have to share their seats...this really needs to be addressed as the Target center personnel were taking the brunt of this problem! Their was actually fights over seating...Please fix this!

    1. I completely agree!! This a problem that needs to be resolved. as I was leaving the arena before A awards were even over( trying to avoid the mob) I was almost trampled. I am thankful I didn't have my younger children with me. I think it was not only disrespectful to Cathedral but also to Aitkin. Aitkin is getting their awards and medals and the parents are getting pushed out by AA fans. Yes, I get you all want to sit together but have respect of each other. Not only were fans rude to each other but they were rude to security trying help resolve the problem. class A fans were told to get off the steps and not block the rows but they ignored security. Class A fans are not allowed in AA reserved seats even when they are empty the entire time clss A dances but AA comes in and gets to sit in the Class A seats when they leave. I think they need to have reserved for A and AA and reserved has to get cleared out inbetween each class. I think they could also move up the start time for class A finals and then leave AA/AAA finals at the same time to give more time for fans to get in and out. As a huge dance fan, I was really disappointed in the class A/AA fans this season when it came to this problem!

    2. I 100% agree. This was my 18th year in a row attending the tournament and I have NEVER seen seating this terrible. Its unfair to all the Single A fans who are trying to celebrate yet are being rushed out of their seats, and unfair to the AA teams that are trying to find a good spot. Sinlge A teams should have their reserved seats, and once sinlge A is over, they should re-do seating for AA. I am not from these teams, however i noticed that Austin and Sauk Rapids fans were basically sitting on the side of the floor--when there were decent seats dead center but had a few single A people holding them. Why not let everyone get a good view by allowing single A to have their reserved seats for ONLY single A. Once they are done, a new person gets that seat reserved for AA. This needs to be fixed- or someone is going to get hurt from all the rushing/pushing, etc.

  14. As strictly an observer, I've seen the chaos of the Class A fans leaving and Class AA fans coming for many years. It is time consuming, and I can only imagine that it is very frustrating. I've always felt the solution is simple... Have AAA start that portion of the competition while AA settles in or if the MSHSL is insistent on AA leading off, then AAA and A should share a side of the arena. I agree that this is an issue and concerns should be directed to the MSHSL.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Agreed! This is a serious problem. MSHSL needs to fix this. It is a mess on the A/AA side every yr.! And it is dangerous! MSHSL FIX THIS NOW!!!!!! If you don't there will eventually be serious problems! Give class A time to enjoy awards then allow A to leave and AA to enter in an orderly fashion!!! It was bad at the X but it is alot worse at Target center. This must be adressed b4 next yr!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. Honestly, push back the start time of AA/AAA finals to 730 instead of 715. This was the first year I noticed (as I am an AAA fan) the hectic mobs. I even heard the announcer say something about people taking their seats so we could get started. I wouldnt mind waiting 15 more minutes for finals to start so A could move out safely and AA fans could get a seat. I always heard that for finals, fan sections from AA would ask A fan sections to save them spots for a certain team. So for a random example, Sartell fans would ask YME fans to save their spots only for Sartell fans and not move if fans from Cathedral or Totino tried to sit their.

One question that has always bothered me was how Totino Grace fans (or should I say alumni)ALWAYS get the front center row for state. Even during prelims they get the front spots. Are those never reserved because every year I see them in the front row going crazy for Totino.

  17. The deal making already happens and that was part of the problem. Those that didn't make a deal were trying to get in to the seats were out of luck and mad. TG made a deal with the A people sitting in those seats. The A people can't leave until the AA people they made the deal with come in to get the seats. It's crazy. mshsl should assign sections for finals.

    ReplyDelete
  18. It seems pretty easy to figure out. If you look at the target center seating... there are basically 3 large sections of seats that all have great views. Cut that long section in half horizontally. That way you have 6 sections. 6 teams make finals- easy. That way, whoever dances first - there fans get Row A-J of this section, and dancing second tonight there fans get J and up etc. It doesnt seem like rocket science to figure out. That way each of the 6 teams in finals gets an even amount of GOOD seating. After that extra fans will have to sit over on the sides. MSHSL- hope you are reading these comments.

  19. I saw all this first hand. As we tried to get in for finals some AA schools refused to give up their seats and when our team was done we had other AA schools crowding in on us as we watched our kids getting their awards. Then a verbal fight broke out between 2 AA schools as we got literally pushed out and they wrestled for seating. Some of our older fans as well as little kids had a hard time with this. Security just kept yelling but did nothing to resolve this. If a side is going to be shared by 2 groups time has to be given for one group to exit before another is allowed to enter. Someone is going to get seriously hurt!

  21. As a AAA parent, we were watching what was going on across on the A/AA side for seating and feeling your pain. This is something that has to be addressed, and phone calls to the MSHSL or a letter writing campaign might help get something done.

I had to have GA seats so I showed up at Target Center 1 hour early to save for my husand, young child and my elderly parents. My son cannot sit from 11 a.m. - 9:30 at night, and either can my eldery parents. I was told several times by the ushers I was not allowed to save any seats. The only seat saved was if it was occupied by a warm body. I'm sorry I don't agree with this policy. The ushers were consistently coming over to me and telling me I had to give up my seats.

Did you see the large Wayzata section being saved by coats and white flags during the break? Those seats were unoccupied for almost 2 hours, and nothing was said or done about that.

Also, on Saturday I was told my ipad was not allowed in so I had to bring it back to my car (after standing in line for almost an hour). I was allowed to have it in my bag on Friday for jazz. I brought it in as entertainment for my son (games/movies). I witnessned MANY people at the door being told their ipads were not allowed, MSHSL rule, NOT Target Center policy. Video cameras and large cameras and lenses are allowed? My iphone camera and video is just as powerful as my ipad. I searched the MSHSL website many times and don't see this policy in writing anywhere. There were MANY people who had them in their seats who didn't get caught with them at the door like I did.

The MSHSL has some issued to deal with before the 2013 tourney.

    1. I was never told that saving seats was not allowed. My friends and I saved around ten seats each day with coats for finals for AAA and no one said anything. And being a bystander to A/AA, personally I would not like to have it where finals seats are still reserved. I understand parents get preference because it is their kid dancing, but it would suck for the students and alumni that want to come support their school and they can't sit in a good spot to watch finals because they would not be someone to get a ticket for reserve seating.

I feel like Saturday as a whole they cracked down more on what was allowed in and what wasn't. It also mattered what door you entered. On Friday I was with my friends who put candy and water bottles in their purse. The candy was at the bottom while the water was on top. Everyone else in our groups was wearing either puffy jackets or sweatshirts. The security basically looked at us, glanced in the purses, and let us walk through. Saturday however was a different story. None of my friends had loose fitting clothes on, but yet we were all patted down and my friend's iPad was taken away. We were told that only MSHSL affiliates and coaches were allowed with iPads (Hello, we all have iPhones. If I am going to record stuff, it will be with that. I am not going to lug out an iPad to do that. My friend only brought it to play games and surf the web easier during the down time). We were still able to bring in water bottles though. After we left on Saturday to get food before finals, we re-entered through the top doors by the sky way. Those guys let nothing in! They made us throw away water bottles and our coffee. I assume that is Target Center policy, but come on, I don't want to pay 4 bucks for water at one of the concessions.

MSHSL seriously needs to work out some kinks in this tournament. It is only becoming a more serious problem each year.

    2. For folks wishing to voice concerns regarding seating at the event, Kevin Merkle, kMerkle@mshsl.org is listed as the MSHSL Director for dance. The more pressure fans put on them to come up with a better solution, the more likely change will happen.

Please be polite, they share the same goals we do - as safe & fun event for all.

Understand that any solution will have tradeoffs.

Make your voice heard and maybe we can help shape a much better option for the future.

  22. couple comments - 1st one YES seating was a hassle, we did have reserved seating and we did have to kick some people out of our seats that were A people, sorry, folks for that - but it was way before 3 when we got there (1:15 to be exact) and yes seating was hardly fair at all for any of the A/AA teams. hope target center can rectify this for next years event.
2 - our girls had 3 goals as it was our first year in 6 yrs since we had been to state, and the first goal was to HAVE FUN - they did, and the other 2 goals more personal, no need to share here, but they made those 2 goals too.
3rd - the rest of the placement would be kinda nice to have to know how you stacked up - I do know that Hutch got 9th and we were told Waconia got 11th in AA high kick.would be interested in knowing how the rest of the teams did.
4th - it is nice that all the st cloud area towns can support each other but it does get a tad overwhelming for us little guys. LOL felt like we were up against giants.

  23. I am hoping that something can be done about the seating for next year...everyone is right, it is dangerous especially for small children and elderly people.

I actually waited in line from 7:20 until the doors opened at 11:15, and when we got inside were told where the GA seats were available. Then shortly before the first A team danced, we were told that the seats were reserved and that there was a communication issue between the MSHSL and Target Center, the seats were reserved, and we needed to move...very frustrating!! They did allow us to stay until our team danced, but we ended up moving 4 times during the day...I think it's silly to have all those empty reserved seats for AA during the A competition and by clearing that side at the end of the A competition, we would be able to use those seats and then the AA fans would also have more spaces to sit...frankly when I have had a reserved seat for A, I did not leave during AA just because I probably would never get a seat again...I like the idea of have having sections set aside during finals determined by the order of performance...great idea! Hope someone listens...

The ipad situation was also ridiculous...the ipads that were "confiscated" from the fans were put in a room and then when people tried to get them back, they couldn't find them...why weren't people told ahead of time that they would not be allowed in...some were told they were too large...what about the posters, tagboard hearts, etc? I missed some dances because fans were holding their posters up the entire time...they were a lot larger than an ipad!

I also think it's not appropriate to have vendors going up and down the aisles during the competition...between sessions it would be fine, but while the competition itself is going on, they shouldn't be on the stairs.

All in all, while the tournament itself was amazing and so fun to watch, alot of these issues really took away from enjoying the weekend...

    ReplyDelete
  24. I don't understand how posters were allowed. They were never allowed in when I was dancing. People use to give them to the dancers because their bags were never checked and then the dancers would give them to the fans.

How come on Friday for jazz, the center three sections very top seats were not open to anyone. They were open on the AA side, but not on the AAA side for jazz? They were tapped off when I got there, so I assumed they were reserved, but no one ever came to sit in them. Those extra seats could have been used as they were easily the best seats in the house (especially the center ones because you see exactly what the judges see).

I honestly just hate the seating arrangement as a whole.

    1. I think that is pretty normal. In prelims they are trying to get the top 6 and some teams are nervous and others not so much. Usually In finals all teams are at their best so the scores look a little different.

  29. Anyone else think it was odd that a AA team who did not medal hung out on the floor while the top 3 were getting pictures taken? Then when this team had to walk by all 3 placing teams not one dancer or coach stopped to say congratulations? I love how the AAA schools all congratulate each other. Even if it is sometimes forced and hard to do, from a fans perspective it looks a lot more classy than just walking away.

    1. We noticed this, but sad to say, wasn't the least bit surprised.

      Delete
    2. As a team that medaled on jazz day, we did not receive any congratulatory hand shakes, hugs or commentary from the teams that did not medal. There just isn't an opportunity for those teams to do that after each of the top placing teams receives their medals they are asked to stay and take team photos by the mshsl photographer and parents that are able to snap a few quick shots. We don't fault them or any of the other teams that did medal. We all see each other behind the scenes if we don't get to congratulate each other on the floor anyway. I have never seen any team snub the top placing teams, it's all circumstantial from the spectator point of view.

      Delete
    3. I agree that spectators shouldn't comment on what they "think" they see going on on the floor. These teams are very supportive of each other and there is plenty of time for congratulations in the chute and dressing areas. I witnessed a AA team standing near the escaltors and the entire team was clapping for their competitors who medaled as that team was riding the escalator down. This is the same team that someone is accusing of being unsportsmanlike. Hardly the case.

      Delete
    4. LIKE!! I completely agree with the 2 previous comments!

  30. Are you saying the teams should stay on the floor? I noticed (as I was on the AAA side) coaches congratulating the teams around then when they were announced 3rd, 2nd, or 1st. I feel like if you're not announced, you should walk off the floor because it seems awkward if your just hanging around when the other teams are gettin photos. I didn't seem any team just walk off without saying something to another team. And the teams also see each other after awards so they might congratulate then.

    1. The reason non placing teams left the floor when they did was because the announcer told them to. He said top 3 placing teams should stay on the floor and all other teams were to exit. That is the reason teams left, not because of poor sportsmanship.

      Delete
    2. Yes, but some teams do stay on to do one last cheer as a team or something like that.

      Delete
    3. No I meant that this non medaling AA kick finalist KNEW they had been asked to clear the floor and just didn't. Then even after they had quite obviously over stayed not one team member or coach -- who are supposed to teach sportsmanship -- even offered a hand shake or as much as a kind word. It was pathetic. Like I said, take a lesson from AAA teams and coaches before next year please!!!!

    4. As the coach of a team that did not medal in AA kick, I can only assume that you might be speaking of my team. I apologize if what you observed appears to be unsportsmanlike. I can assure you that from our end of things, it was not. We were standing next to Sartell and congratulated them after they returned to their line following receiving their medals. Yes, we took a moment as a team to recognize our fans, as we have done this every year, medal or not. Upon leaving the floor all of the teams were taking their photos, it was not an appropriate time to stop and congratulate Chaska or St. Cloud Cathedral. We did do this, however after the ceremony. We in no way heard an announcement about leaving the floor and to my recollection were not out on the floor very long, in fact were following other non medaling teams in to the chute area. We did not intend to take anything away from the top placing teams as we respect them greatly and think they did an amazing job. We were just so proud of our team for the job they did in such a tough competition and took a moment to acknowledge that. Please also keep in mind that as a spectator you have no idea what is being said on the floor or afterwards. I am sad that you missed any of the positive things that were going on.

      Delete
    5. Agreed with a few comments above.....if you are not announced have the respect to leave the floor. When its your turn for a medal you would want teams to do the same.

  33. I do know the scores between Chaska and Sartell were very close, if one judge changed a point we would have had a complete tie, not sure which tiebreaker it would have went to but it would have gone to at least the 4th tie breaker!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. They were that close? Really? Not saying I do not believe you, but I saw a big difference between Chaska and Sartell. I can only see Sartell beating Chaska in a few of the kick categories, but I feel that Chaska's dance was superior to Sratell.

      Delete
    2. They really were that close, why won't people give credit where credit is due. Sartell had an incredible kick routine, their connections are clean, their formations are FLAWLESS, Sartell's kick technique is awesome, and no one ever gives them credit for that, since they didn't theme out their dance to the maximum people overlook them. I'm just here to say NEVER discount teams like Sartell or even St. Cloud Cathedral, spectators of AAA didn't this year, where I was sitting...we were rooting for you guys, your kicks are out of control awesome. Keep it up!!

      Delete
    3. I was lucky enough to be able to see the final score sheets. The scores were close, but looking at rankings and scores, Chaska was a clear first, Sartell a clear second and Cathedral a clear third. The final point and rank breakdown was as such. There are 8 judges on the panel, 5 judges gave Chaska 1st, while 3 judges gave Sartell 1st. Once the high and 2 low scores are dropped, Chaska has 6 rank points and Sartell had 8. Chaska was 12 or 14 (I know it was one of those) score sheet points higher than Sartell. Was it close, yes, however they were not close to a tie, as the numbers were clear. In the case of a tie, one judge would have had to give Sartell 12 more points than Chaska in order for Sartell to win a tie breaker. Again, these are purely just score and numbers. This is not a put down to any team in any way, and it is not to say it was not close, it is just to say these are the facts.
On a personal note. I don't think there is one team out there that is not giving credit where credit is due and no one discounted anyone. Just because someone has an opinion about who they thought did what better, does not mean they think the other team did poorly. There is no reason to defend any team, as they were all amazing and no one is arguing that.
Being in the top 3 among all the teams that were there is a massive accomplishment, as this year is arguably one of the strongest AA kick years has ever seen. All teams have a right to be proud and feel successful.

  34. Of the big 3 kick invitational competitions in AA this yr, Chaska only won one. They won Totino, Cathedral won Holy Angels and Sartell won the Chaska event, it was very close all yr!

    1. However I do believe I heard that at the Totino invite, Chaska received a point deduction for a violation. I was told it was because of their costume. I have believe I read it somewhere and without the deduction, they would have won.

      Delete
    2. That was at Holy Angles. Cathedral won that comp. I was there and Cathedral deserved to win that competition, Chaska's dance looked good but Cathedral's performance was flawless. Please don't try to take that well deserved win away from them.

      Delete
    3. Yes. It was at Holy Angels. Cathedral did look amazing and no one is trying to take it away from them. I don't think that was the point of the comment. I think they were just curious.
It is also true that Chaska did have a deduction that day of -3 points per judge, there were 7 judges, so that is a total of 21 points. Without the deduction, the results would have been different. However, many factors go into a scoresheet, including deductions. Because of all those factors on a scoresheet Cathedral did beat Chaska that day, and it was fair, they won.
You are right Cathedral looked flawless, so did Chaska, so did Sartell and Totino. It was great competition with lots of talent. Lets not take away from any team that danced.

  35. As a dance fab I thought both dancers were great, but very different. I find it tough to compare theme dances vs normal dances. So many themes each year- I wonder what themes we will see next year. Overall AA talent in the finals was spectacular! From 1st to 6th, each dance was very different and entertaining in its own way.

  38. Erin I know you were hoping for some more positive comments, but this s a reminder for all teams.
I am not sure if this is the forum in which I should use, but I would like to say some words on posting comments on youtube, as I know a lot of fans and dancers read this site. I was told yesterday that there were some harsh comments towards the team I support posted on youtube. So I read them and I was shocked and flabbergasted. They had every right to be upset . The comments were basically attacking their team, and right after they won a state title. The claims made on the comments were completely untrue, mean and in some cases slanderous.
All of the dancers and coaches from all of these teams work extremely and equally hard. To comment on youtube, either dancer or fan, trying to put down ANY team is simply wrong and unsportsmanlike. I ask that all who read this please remind yourself, your team, and your fans to please refrain from negative and bashing-type of comments. I am sure all the coaches of these teams are in favor of good and positive sportsmanship.
Bashing-type of comments really only reflect badly on the person or team that the negative comment is coming from, not actually of the team that is being made towards. While the all the comments on youtube are anonymous, please know that in most cases these comments are able to be identified with a specific team, not really as anonymous as you think.
All the teams at the state were some of the best I have even seen. I hope we can all focus on that!

    1. I think the person who posted the video should disable comments, clearly the anonymity of youtube and this website fuel the controversial statements from all parties, those who won and those who didn't. I've seen lots of nasty comments coming from teams supporting state champs and those who don't support the state champs so I think its just time to shut it down, take down the comment button on the youtube video.

    2. I think comments as well as the like/dislike should be removed from YouTube videos for dance team. Two of my favorites, Chaska kick and MG jazz have a bunch of dislikes......those people either know nothing about dance or are jusy jealous. My guess is the second option.......

    3. If people are "disliking" Chaskas Kick and MGs dance they obviously know nothing about dance.

Youtube is a great place to SEE all the talent MN dance has to offer- hopefully everyone can just appreciate all the amazing dance talent our state has to offer!

    4. Thank you to whoever posted this! I have seen those comments and they were out of control. There is more than one video that has this going on. I love those trying to improve sportsmanship. No dancers should have to read any of that.

I agree most of the those bad comments made and the like/dislikes are from jealously or a lack of knowledge. I mean I loved every dance, how could you not. Everyone was amazing in kick and jazz! And eveyone I have talked to has said the same.

    7. I agree with this post also. These poor teams should not have to read nasty comments about their performances after they poored everything they have into it. Chaska did a wonderful job and deserved the win! I watch a lot of these videos on youtube and it seems like people use to post nasty things about Faribault a lot, and other teams also. Keep your heads held high girls and be proud of what you accomplished this year! That goes to every team that danced at the state tournament. You all did a great job!

  39. I only saw AA and AAA kick. I was running back and forth from side to side trying to catch all of my favorite teams.
In AA my favorite dance was Chaska. I loved their dance. Someone told me that there formations were hieroglyphics and I thought that was so cool. The dance just always kept my attention and it looked like it was so much fun to dance. Also I thought there kicks were amazing! How do they get that kind of height and have good technique still leaves me in awe! They actually had my favorite kick dance overall through the all of state! My second favorite was Totino. I loved their choreography. It was so entertaining. I have always wanted to be a ninja!
In AAA, my two favs were Eastview and EP. I liked Eastview's because of the barre formation they did and I really think they upped their game in their kicks from the beginning of the year. They were very strong and pretty at the same time. I could have cared less about the tutus lighting up. Regardless they still have a great dance. But EP! I loved their dance! Great theme! They do a few little moves that are so cute. At one point they point to their ring finger and did the chicken dance! It was awesome!

  40. One thing I think was great this year was use of the floor. Pretty much every time in AA and AAA (I did not see A), had constant movement and great use of the floor space in formations. Probably some of the coolest transitions Ive seen in years.

  42. It is actually annoying that people get upset if they do not like their dance. Yes, I find it very rude if someone says a particular team is "bad" or they only won because of "politics", however, if I want to express my opinion on a dance, I feel like that is my right to do so. Some of the dances this year I was really not a fan of. It was not because they included bad dancers, but because the dance just did not work for me. I agree the "like/dislike" button is useless (who cares if someone liked it or not), but to say that people who do not like a certain teams dance "know nothing about dance" is kind of an overkill. The person just did not like the dance. Almost everyone I talk to find Maple Grove's jazz from 2008 the mother of all dances, but there are still some people who do not like it. If someone doesn't like a dance, who cares, you too probably do not like some dances either.

As for my favorites, it hands down has to be Chaska's kick routine. Their choreography was flawless along with their execution. EP and Apple Valley both had adorable kick routines as well. Best jazz dance has to be Wayzata. I do not know if it was because EVERYBODY was behind them at state, but the energy I felt during that dance was unbelievable.

  44. Next year we will come back swinging! I believe Chaska is a phenomenal team, but really should be 3A. None of the 2A teams have Varsity, Jr Varsity, B Squad, and a middle school team. Fair is fair, folks. Dividing classes by equal thirds is a poor system when competition is SO tight. Chaska has the cream of the crop. Smaller schools do not.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It goes by school size, You can find it the MSHSL website.

      Delete
    2. Actually they are divided by size in equal thirds. Look again.

      Delete
    3. Please get over the AAA//AA debacle. They were put in AA last spring and no one really made an issue until they came out of the box swinging. They went into this season not placing since Holy Angels (3rd in State 2011) consistently out placed them all last season. It is not up to Chaska where they are put, but up to MSHSL.

The same can be said for A teams with numbers. Some teams have 25-30 competing on the floor and others have 5-10. Obviously a team with more girls is going to have better visual effectiveness, and their formations can be more intricate, so their dances are going to look better in some cases.

Lastly, saying they should be AAA is a slap in the face to all A and AA. You're saying that AAA is automatically better and A and AA teams do not deserve to compete against them. This is not the case because A team Duluth Marshall outscored AA teams this season at meets and same can be said for Sartell who outscored numerous AAA teams.

At the end of the day, Chaska had a really good season. Next year brings a new team for everyone, and next year Chaska will reappear in AA. Each team all across the classes (including Chaska) will have to step up their game next year because dance is an ever evolving sport and resting on what you did the previous season will not get you to the top.

      Delete
    4. Actually, I think you may have read more into my statements than intended. However, the truth of the matter is that larger schools do have more access to resources. It is also true for A and AA, and so perhaps my original statement about dividing by size alonerather than size divided into equal thirds would make sense. Just because something has ALWAYS been one way does not mean it is the best way. Oh, and I think you meant "debate" not "debacle"...

      Delete
    5. I agree about the relative strength in classes. It is ultimately fair to compete with teams of similar enrollments. And the classes should also be roughly equal in numbers of teams. However, there will always be anomalies. In other sports teams in a lower class defeat teams in a higher class often. In dance it happens too. For example YME outscored 4 AA teams in the West Central Conference meet in both Jazz and High Kick.

      Delete
    6. Chaska is a great dance team. do they have resources that other AA teams do not have, Yes. but to say they shouldn't be in class AA because they are so good and they have these resources isn't right. They are in AA because of the school size and unfortunetly their isn't any other way to do it than divide by 3. It's no different than the smallest A school dancing agianst the biggest 1A teams. There are alot of class A teams that have Varsity, J.V. A and J.V.B teams. Should these teams be in class AA then? There are also alot of 1A teams that don't have J.V's because they don't have the numbers to barely have a varsity. You have teams in every class that are Awesome, good, medium and not as good. but eventually that good and medium team are going to become an awesome team because they are sick of losing and coming in 3,4,5,6,7 or not making it to state. Then when that team thats not as good or doesn't have the name becomes awesome everyone will complain about them. It's a never ending cycle. So dividing by 3 is the only fair way to put teams into classes.

      Delete
    7. Even though I think the class system works just fine the way it is, the only way to "solve" this debate would be to have a completely new system. Instead of having A, AA, AAA, there could be a system similar to UDA where the divisions are broken up into to "Large Varsity" and "Small Varsity" where it matters on how many girls you put onto the floor and not how big your school is. However, this would be potentially unfair to other sports because every other sport under MSHSL follows the school size= class size division.

      Delete
    8. This is confusing to me. I guess I do not see that Chaska has anymore resources than any other AA teams. What do think these resources are?

      Delete
    9. I know Chaska has dance studios strictly built for their use, but so do many other teams so I don't so them as having "more" resources. I presume many of the dancers have studio experience and I have heard that the team takes studio classes during the summer. But again, I really don't think this classifies as more resources. People need to get off their case. Like someone said above, no one had a problem last spring when people knew Chaska was AA. People only became mad once they realized how hard those girls worked to improve from 2011.

    10. give me a break, most teams don't even have a JV team in AA!!!!!!!!!!!!! All I see are people explaining why its ok for Chaska, a AAA a power to move down and clean up. Get over it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! From what I saw, eastview, 744 points, chaska 743 points, Sartell 741 points, Eden Prairie 740 points! OK AAA and AA are oh so close! Chaska was a AAA power, like Benilde in Hockey was in Class A, but being classy rather than winning championship after championship they moved up, Chaska moved down, which is kinda classless, to get what they thought was an ez champ, wasn't so ez was it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Everyone wants payback next yr and a few teams were oh so close in jazz and kick so enjoy your medals and get ready for payback!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Faribault Totino, St. Cloud Cathedral and Sartell want payback for a AAA team moving down and taking our medal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh and for all you Chaska fans who say you had to move down, give me a break, you did not Benilde and Roseou in hockey show they greats can opt up and stay up and compete and win!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Way to go Benilde!!!!!!!!!!!!

      Delete
    11. It wouldn't be so classlesss if Chaska had actually placed higher in AAA before dropping down to AA. The choice is for the SCHOOL to make whether or not they want to move down. You can opt to stay in the class you are in. What do you want more a clean win or an easy one? Perhaps to some a win is a win and it doesn't matter how you get it. Plus, I have never witnessed such rudeness in a fan base than those from Chaska. Really, if your going to stoop down to our level, please learn how to be gracious fans. You can learn a lot from those of us who AA every year and have to fight for a place to watch our daughters dance. Chaska's unwillingness to work with the other AA fans ended up being a HUGE part of the seating problem during finals.

      Delete
    12. Chaska DID NOT have the choice to move down. Enrollment went down so they were FORCED to go down to AA. Complaining about them moving down is out of jealously and is completely unnecessary. The fact that you say that Chaska moved down for an "easy win" is truly hurtful to the girls on the team, they worked for that championship and deserved them both 100%. As far as I know, Fairbault, which was also an AAA power moved down also because of their enrollment, yet no one seems to have a problem with them! Classless is an unnecessary statement because Chaska has the nicest and hardest working girls I have ever met. Their is ABSOLUTELY NO NEED to keep trashing the team who worked their butt of this season to win 2 state championships, we should be congratulating them on their victory and all the hard work they put in to accomplish this instead of slashing them down. Please keep in mind having good sportsmanship because these comments that are all false are hurtful to Chaska.

      Delete
    13. Not true, St. Cloud Cathedral is small enough to move down to Class A but did not! You can opt up. And spare me the hard work thing, other schools work as hard Chaska so stop saying how they work so hard, that alone is demeaning to other schools, makes it sound like Chaska outworked everyone and that was not the case, they maybe worked as hard but not harder!

      Delete
    14. While St. Cloud Cathedral's enrollment does in fact qualify it to be in A for Jazz/Funk, their enrollment DOES NOT qualify them to be in A for high kick (enrollment is 434, cut off for A/AA high kick is 365). When this situation occurs, MSHSL ALWAYS goes with the high kick numbers, due to the fact that if schools only compete in one category, it is most likely high kick. So, this does not mean St. Cloud Cathedral necessarily opts up. Please, if you're going to make slandering claims, do your research first.
It is true that Chaska was not "forced" to move down to AA, they could have opted up and stayed in AAA. In fact I know that Spring Lake Park has done this the past couple years (although Spring Lake Park is only 10 under the cut off vs. the 100 under that Chaska is), and Chaska DID OPT UP for the 2010-2011 season. However, from what I've seen in MANY other posts, Chaska moved down to AA because their administration (principal, athletic director, etc.) told them they had to. This was NOT a decision made by the team, coaches, or fans. This is why these comments are so unbelievable, the fact that a decision made by a few people has caused fans of other schools to completely attack a team of hardworking girls and two wonderfully choreographed routines. And by the way, just because someone says that a team "works hard" does not mean that they think they "work the hardest". That's just completely baffling to me how someone would think that. Obviously, as we saw at state this year, every single team there works INCREDIBLY hard.
Finally, just because Chaska won both dances this year DOES NOT mean that they moved down for an "easy win". Just look at results of competitions/state from years past and you'll see this perfectly. In high kick 2010 and 2011, Chaska got 7th and 5th, respectively, at state. In those same years, Faribault got 2nd and 4th. Faribault beat Chaska BOTH years prior to this year, and this year took 5th in high kick while Chaska took 1st. Additionally, Chaska consistently placed behind Academy of Holy Angels last year in kick, who ended up taking 2nd in AA. This means that more than likely, if Chaska wouldn't have opted up into AAA last year, they would have gotten 3rd or lower last year in AA, which I'm sure none of you would have had a problem with. Overall, Chaska's success tends to fluctuate. You can see this between 07 and 08 state, when Chaska went from not making it to state at all to placing 2nd in AAA. Same with the past two years, Chaska went from 5th in AAA to possibly placing 1st in AAA (look at the comment above, if those scores are correct Chaska was 1 point behind Eastview, and if the rank points worked out right, they could have beat Eastview). From what I've heard, something similar can be seen when comparing Chaska's scores to the AAA jazz scores, where they may have beaten Eastview. It just happened that Chaska both moved to AA and came up with two better-than-usual-for-them dances in the same year.
Now, I'm not saying that all of these comments are from jealousy, but clearly people aren't happy with the circumstances of what happened at state this year. However, none of these were Chaska's dance team's fault, and they should not be bashed because of them. I'm sure many of the people leaving these comments are parents or friends of dance team kids, or even worse members of other AA dance teams. I know many of Chaska's dancers read this blog. How would you feel if you knew that people were writing this kind of stuff about your daughter or about you?

    15. Chaska is in class AA get over it already. They have a right to be in AA. They do not have to opt up if they do not want to. Just because they are good doesn't mean they have to opt up. They had to work hard for those 1st places. They did get beat by a few teams this season. If Chaska wasn't good nobody would care that they were AA. I think its stupid that everyone thinks they should opt up. does that mean Cannon Falls and Aitkin should opt up too? They have been 1 and 2 for 4-5 years now. No it means that other teams need to come up with a better than usual routine and keep working hard to beat those teams. I think it's very bad sportsmanship to come on this blog and complain and say that Chaska doesn't deserve to be in AA. If they didn't belong in AA the MSHSL wouldn't of put them in AA. You are obviously from a team that Chaska beat and its giving all AA teams a bad name, complaining and saying hurtful things. These are young high school girls that work hard and don't deserve to be blasted because they have a great dance program. Think about if that was your team everyone was hating for no reason. And as for their fans being horrible. I didn't encounter any Chaska fans but I did encounter other AA fans that were very rude and not so polite to other AA fans and Class A fans. So you really can't blame the seating problems on Chaska fans.
I think all teams at state this year put on a great show. I think this years state was one of the best in all classses.
I am not from Chaska or any other AA team. I am a dance fan who comes to watch everyone, and really enjoys the sport. Its a shame that people have to put other teams down for something that is so out of the coaches, dancers, fans' hands.

    16. Thank for the above two comments. I would normally never comment, especially when it has nothing to do with our team, but I am overly disgusted by what I have read. I am a parent from a AAA school and our dancers have had nothing but nice things to say about the Chaska team and how supportive they were of our team at state. Their fans even stood up for our dance on the AAA side. I would hardly call that poor fans. Ironically all those who are claiming Chaska had bad sportsmanship are ones on this blog and other social media sites that are bashing Chaska. THAT is where the bad sportsmanship lies, not with Chaska. I am shocked that this is how a dance team is being treated entering AA, and surprised that Chaska seems to be the only one subjected to it, as Faribault also moved into AA. Those who are bashing them should be ashamed of themselves. Fact is, ALL teams worked hard and Chaska deserved their win. It is time to accept it. It is time to , where MSHSL qualifies them to be. Bashing them on every social media site is not going to take away their championship or change their AA status , it only make those bashing them look like sore losers, and believe me it is obviously which team(s) you are coming from. Why not respect those you compete against? It is a total shame to me that this what people are talking about this instead of the great dances that were on the floor this year.

    17. Even though some of the negative comments above are anonymous it is easy to see what teams you come from. Chaska won, it is not going to change you are only creating a bad name for your team. I was on the AA side and there were a lot of negative and rude fans fighting for seating, not only Chaska, but that is something for the Target Center to deal with. What I saw was a team not stand up for the championship team, which I think was unsportmanship like. I think all parents and coaches need to remember what kind of example they are setting at practice, at home and on this blog for their daughters, because your daughter is going to grow up in your footsteps. And would you be proud if they were nothing but negative comments and poor sportsmanship just because they lost? Life is 10% of what happens to you and 90% of how you react and a lot of people are reacting pretty poorly on this website.

    18. How do you know Chaska was not forced to move down? Are you on the coaching staff or the athletic director at Chaska?

    19. I'm assuming you're talking to me, the author of the really long post (sorry about that, by the way, I may have gotten a bit carried away....). No, I'm not a part of their coaching staff/administration, in fact I'm not affiliated with them in any way. I just hate seeing nasty and unwarranted comments like the ones above. As for me saying it "was true they weren't forced into AA" I suppose I should have been more clear. I say they weren't "forced" to move to AA in the sense that MSHSL's policy, from what I understand, still gives them the option to opt up a class. So, looking at the situation based purely on what the MSHSL did, they probably were never in a situation where they had absolutely no option to stay in AAA. However, from what other comments on this blog and in that nasty thread of comments on their youtube video have said, their admin told them they had to move down to AA. So in that sense, yes, they were probably forced to AA. I was mainly originally commenting on how I think the MSHSL didn't force them. And honestly, you can think what you want. Could there have been some unusual circumstances where the MSHSL in fact did force them to AA that no one knows about? Sure! I'm just trying to explain what happened based on what I've been seeing and trying to help put an end to all of the nonsense going on in this blog.

    20. Why does it matter if they were forced down, or just opted to stay in the class they were assigned? MSHSL assigned them to class AA because of their enrollment, why does everyone think they have to opt up? just because they competed AAA before doesn't mean they have to Opt up this time. No one cares about faribault moving down, why not bash them. Just because a team is good doesn't mean they have to opt. up. Every team has great years, good years and not so good years. They raised the bar in AA and I think it's a great, now next season we will see even better dancing and choreography from AA. I think its a great thing to have Chaska and faribault AA it's going to make AA even more competitive. Great job Chaska, I hope you are ignoring all the haters and really enjoying your State Championships!!!

    23. Chaska is NOT the only AA team that has multiple levels. Fridley has varsity jazz, varsity kick, jv kick, jv jazz, and b squad/jv jazz. We also take 7th grade and up.

Very proud of Chaska! Welcome to AA and congrats on your double State Championship! I can't wait to see what you come up with for next year! :)

Instead of whining, we should all be focused on what we can do to build a great program for our schools. I am glad Chaska bumped down. It raised the bar for AA. The beautiful AA coaches love a challenge!

And for the record....Chaska would do fabulous regardless of class they are assigned. They are a strong program with dedicated coaches and sweet dancers. I had the honor of working with two of their dancers at All State. They were dolls!

My team was inspired by Chaskas spotsmanship at camp and made some adjustments to how we do things as a result. :)

Congrats to all dance teams in MN for a great season! 2012-2013........here we come!

  45. Its so hard for me to pick a favorite dance, especially since all the teams in finals looked flawless! In jazz, i would have to say Chaska and St. Cloud Tech were my favorites. Wayzata was just ridiculous! The amount of energy they bring to the floor is unbelievable! In kick Brainerd was a big favorite for me! I love that they can bring a jazz-like attitude and blend it with a kick dance. Brainerd never disappoints me with their kick dances! I also loved Chaska, of course. Their formations always blow my mind. I was also happy to see Lake City move up in the ranks for Class A kick. I was in their section from 2005-2009, and it's awesome to see how much they're improving from year to year!

  46. I have a feeling that if State was at the xcel center still, the seating would be much less of an issue. I miss the xcel.. its so perfect for a State dance competition!
