Eastview Showcase: 1/28/12
No results for this event will be announced.  Teams were scored, but all participating teams signed a contract agreeing not to share scores even within their own team outside of coaches.  There was also no video taping allowed.  Participating teams: Eagan, Eastview, Apple Valley, Chaska, Maple Grove, Spring Lake Park, Wayzata, Hopkins, Blaine

  1. Readers: If you wish to comment on what you saw at the Eastview showcase - please refrain from assigning a placement to the teams. (ie So and so was better than team B) I am under a lot of pressure to make sure that doesn't (supposedly) influence anything in the future -- and since I'm the only one signing my name to posts, I seem to be held accountable for anything said, fair or not.

  2. How did the new dances look? (Maple Grove, Eastview, Apple Valley)?

    1. Maple Grove jazz is amazing again. Best technique hands down, choreography is so so difficult and they make it look easy.
Eastview kick is entertainment at its best. So creative and fun. Great kicks don't hurt either!
Apple Valley......well......I dont want to negatively influence anyone.

    2. I actually had a different opinion. Maple Grove's jazz was very good, but, for me personally, I wanted something more. Eastview was outstanding, those girls should be proud with how much talent they have, but I prefer the more upbeat (like EP's kick this year) dances, so it wasn't my favorite. I have mixed feelings about Apple Valley, very fun dance, but something seemed off about it.

  3. I know Fridley isn't usually a team everyone talks about, but I think theyr'e gonna be a team to watch out for at state.

  4. I'm intrigued by your comment Erin. I'm curious what is influencing what. Is the publication of placings alledgely influencing future contests, or is it the comments that follow that are influencing something? The entire showcase concept is boggling to me. Why so secretive?

  5. If the coaches think posted comments on this blog or YouTube influence judges decisions at sections or state then there is something definitely wrong with the whole system. Sign confidentiality agreements? That's a bit ridiculous.

  6. Well I get it, and I don't at the same time. It was a bit overkill to "serve" me with the document that was signed while I was sitting in the stands. I didn't know I was going to the event until last minute, and then it was really just to enjoy it and see my friends. I didn't say hi to anyone when I arrived, but I was "found" anyways. Apparently it was decided what to do with me in advance.
As far as secrecy goes, its up to them to do that, and I've chosen to respect that long before I was presented with the contract. However, the level of intense secrecy does beg to question why that is needed at all in a professional judging situation. Is it to keep judges from making assumptions about how state will turn out? I sure hope they don't need that. (I don't think they do) Perhaps its just to keep the crowd from getting behind a supposed "favorite", and maybe its to keep your own team from making a judgement of "we're the best!" or "we're gonna lose to them" - something I have personally done with my dancers to keep attitudes in check. So in that way, I get it. I am not here to pass a judgement on their motives on scores, and I'm sure all teams had their own reasons.
The unfortunate thing is that I certainly wasn't sure if I was free to comment on the dances when I left or not. No one specifically said I can't comment, but that vibe was certainly there in my mind. To anyone there it wasn't an information friendly event, so I've chosen to leave it be and live to blog again another day. I really don't need any negative comments about how awful I am right now, so I'll save it for sections and state where I'm more prepared for people to disagree.
My intent is to serve this sport, not make new enemies, and it saddens me to feel that I am being pressured to do anything when I'm just an independent voice who only has the power that you assign to it. Media coverage is something this sport has wanted and needed, but I guess not everyone is ready for what that might mean. I simply do my best to help move us in that direction, with the utmost respect and caring for the girls involved and teams that might not want it. At least it's coming from a coach, and not some you tube free for all or a reporter with no knowledge of our manners or style. Ultimately, if you don't want to know what I think, then you don't have to read it. I still plan to do section previews like last year, and I hope everyone can be responsible enough to make their own decisions and judge, coach, dance, and parent as they see fit - not according to what I think.

  7. Wait, so the coaches made you sign a document saying not to share anything from the event? If they wanted it to be this secretive, why not just not allow the public to view the event? Everyone puts teams into their places once they have danced. I could easily put each team into a placement right now and I feel like this should not matter, nor should it "influence" future placements of teams. I have heard the announcer numerous times say "Judges do not have a preconceived notion of how well teams will do" or something along those lines. However, this whole thing makes me rethink whether judges do that or not. So does this mean we can not share what teams danced to or how well they danced? I guess all I will say about teams is that there are two teams that were dancing at the showcase that will for sure be taking home a state title. If you were there, you probably know what teams I am talking about.

  8. As a judge I do not get influenced in the past rankings..we are told to judge what we see that day no matter what their name is. I enjoy this website and everyone's input and in no way does that influence me in judging. Just wanted to comment from a judges eye..

  9. Fridley is truly an inspirational team. I've been watching them out of the corner of my eye now for several years. I agree that they are a team to watch out for, I can't help but hope they come out strong.

  10. Erin, I greatly enjoy this blog and appreciate your insightful commentary. I look forward to your thoughts on Sections. Regarding the "showcase" I find it incredibly arrogant for Eastview to decide who's in and who's out, although anyone could have named most of those teams. I was happy to see Hopkins included. They've been robbed being in such a tough section. Again, thank you for this site. Keep your thoughts coming!

    1. Eastview was simply the host school, not the God of who was included. This was intended as a coaching tool to see how many of the top AAA teams from last year (obviously Chaska is no longer AAA) compare right before sections. Some teams who have been doing very well were unable to attend ( Tech, Brainerd) and others were included and chose not to be involved ( Burnsville, EP). It is a great thing for teams like Hopkins who are part of the most difficult AAA section to see how they compare. I don't think there are any truly knowledgeable dance team people who would say that all of the teams included were not the top of the heap. Eastview should not be slammed for helping to organize a great event. They should be thanked.

  11. Wait did Eastview personally invite teams to the showcase?

  12. If influencing outcomes is the issue, maybe it's time for the dance team world to start hiring outside judges. Dance teams are found in neighboring states, why not get some judges that are unfamiliar with the ways of Minnesota. If they judge dance, they obviously know technique, so why not hire someone from a third party point of view that has no knowledge of what goes on in Minnesota?

  13. While this is one of few times I have had the opportunity to look at this blog, it was brought to my attention that there is some conversation about the event hosted at Eastview and the team which I coach on here, so I wanted to speak on behalf of Eastview and all of teams in attendance. First, a little background and history on the purpose of Saturday's event.

Several coaches whose teams performed on Saturday were at Just For Kix camp together back in July and talked about wanting to get another performance in before the Section Tournament without competing at an invitational. Similar to the Catholic Jamboree held in Class AA, we mimicked the idea of doing a smaller showcase, receiving scores, but not announcing the results. We felt this was a great incentive for our dancers to practice towards another meet and an opportunity to gain insight on where we stand to go forward in coaching the rest of the season. We each checked gym space in our schools to see who could host and Eastview happened to be open that day. We then connected with some of our coaching friends to see if others would be interested in participating and the ball got rolling. Some teams then emailed showing interest in participating and were immediately welcomed, others were asked by participating coaches as they wanted teams there they were hoping to be competitive with. So, this was not a show that I, the coach of Eastview, hand-picked who was invited to participate. If you did attend the show you would notice that it was not named in the program or called by the announcer ‘The Eastview Showcase’. In fact, the profits from the gate that night were split evenly amongst all teams participating so other than being the host school, the event was not about Eastview. Truly, this was a bunch of coaching friends getting together to get a little more feedback before the most exciting and competitive part of our season.

There are so many extremely passionate people in our sport and the sport is based so much off of opinion, professional and personal. While many people are excited to read the opinions, predictions and hype that surrounds this time of year, it can also get really personal and hurtful. We want our athletes focused and positive right now, so there was a collective intent of keeping the results between the coaches to attempt to avoid any extra or unnecessary hype, but more so because the original intent of the evening was for coaches to get feedback/ another scoresheet on their routines, not to compete at another competition.

I am thrilled that people are working to create more media and press for dance team as I feel it is one of the next steps in the advancement of our sport. This site provides valuable information for many people involved in the MN Dance Team community and I hope people continue to use this forum in a positive manner. In the 18 years I have been involved in Dance Team (as a dancer, judge and coach) I am amazed at what we have collectively done! Let’s keep moving forward. Let's keep encouraging growth in our sport.

On to what are the most anticipated and fun weeks of the year for Dance Team fanatics!

  14. Agreed 110% !!! As a fellow initiator, coach, and supporter of this event; I believe it was a great way for highly competitive teams to support one another as well as a great tool for coaches to see how routines are scoring close to sections without the added stress of awards and post competition opinions flying around you tube or on sites like this.
I am also very much for media coverage for dance teams. However, I would like more factual reporting only and less editorial views. Even if the original editorial was never meant to cause trouble or spark controversy, it leads to another comment, and another, and another. We need to remember that these are KIDS and not paid professional athletes. Words can sting them pretty hard after they have put their heart and soul into their sport.
I would like to wish all teams and coaches the best if luck in the upcoming weeks.

  15. Thank you Jenny, that was wonderfully said and I could not agree more. All of the coaches at Chaska fully support and respect your statement.

For us, it was a wonderful opportunity to get score sheets, without going to a traditional competition. For the past 5 years at our school we have brought in a couple of teams a season, had judges come in just to receive a score sheets. We have never announced scores or placement. It was just a great way to get a score sheet right before sections. This was the same thing just done on a larger scale. I think it was a great evening full great dancing in a non-invite like atmosphere. It was a very fun night and we felt lucky to be a part of it!

The coaches that organized this event should be applauded for thinking outside the box on how to create a great shore sheet and performance opportunity for their dancers in the greatest environment possible before sections.

The coaches of Chaska wish all teams good luck in their sections ventures and state! It is a great year of dance team!

  16. Thank you coaches for adding more clarity about your event, and for the excellent comments. I appreciate you chiming in! Your thoughts are ALWAYS welcome here. Hopefully there is more clarity about the event itself for readers. I'd love it if next year whoever is hosting would do some pre-meet information for the site via interview or something, to keep the communication going about new ways to host events, share profits, or replace basketball duals. I'm sure other teams would like to know more about it. Otherwise, I am sorry that not everyone wants opinions about dances, but it is done with respect and careful thought, knowing I cannot please everyone.
